Chemical Peels

chemical peel is a treatment where a peeling agent is applied to the skin with the aim to remove parts of the skin (and any defects) and in the process to allow new skin to grow and replace the old skin. It is a form of accelerated skin exfoliation. Superficial chemical peels are safe to do during pregnancy and lactation

Types of chemical peels

  • Superficial peels: peels penetrate to just below the first layer of skin
  • Medium depth peels: peels penetrate into second layer of skin
  • Deep peels: peels penetrate through the skin and reach to just below the skin

Advantages of chemical peel treatments

  • To give skin a fresh look
  • To treat photodamaged skin
  • To treat skin pigments: melasma, freckles, sun spots
  • To treat comedonal acne
  • To improve skin wrinkles and texture
  • To treat superficial scars: acne, surgical, traumatic

The chemical peel procedure

  • The skin is degreased with a skin solution
  • The peel is applied to the skin. There may be a stinging or prickling sensation
  • The peel solution is washed off or neutralised
  • A calming cream and sunscreen are applied
  • Post peel: You may see faint redness, mild flaking, scabs, mild swelling depending on the peel used

Jessner Peel

The Jessner peel has been formulated over a hundred years ago and is still used today to treat acne, brown spots, to even out skin tone and to smooth out superficial line, wrinkles and scars. It can be used as a superficial peel or a medium depth peel. Jessner peel is made up of a mixture of lactic acid, salicyclic acid and resorcinol in a 95% alcohol solution. It is safe when done by a trained dermatologist

Cosmelan peel

The Cosmelan peel is a two-part treatment to lighten skin pigments. The initial treatment, called the cosmelan cream mask,  is done in the clinic by Dr Joyce Lim. The skin is degreased before the mask is applied. This mask is left on for a specific number of hours (usually between 6-10 hours) before it is removed usually at home. After that you will continue with the home treatment, which is the second part of the treatment. The treatment is hydroquinone free

Advantages of the cosmelan peel

  • Can be used on all skin types
  • Does not contain hydroquinone
  • Lightens most skin pigmentation: melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Skin looks bright and feels smooth
  • Prevent post acne pigmentation
  • Reduces oil gland activity
