Excessive Sweating

Treatments For Excessive Sweating

Anti–perspirant is often used. If this fails, iontophoresis or injections to block the secretion of the chemical that activates sweat glands could be more effective. Recently there are heat and light devices to permanently control excessive sweating. One of them uses microwave technology.

Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is a treatment for excessive sweating where ionized substance, usually water is introduced through intact skin by the application of a direct current. It is a simple and safe treatment for excessive sweating in the palms, the soles and the underarms. It is convenient as you can do the treatment at home.

Neuromodulator

WHAT IS NEUROMODULATOR?

For excessive sweating on the underarms or palms or forehead, injections are helpful and may be life changing for some individuals. The injection works by reducing the activity of the sweat glands by stopping the nerve transmission to the glands. The area to be treated is first anaesthetised using an anaesthetic cream to reduce your discomfort. Lots of small injections are used to cover the area. There may be bruising and soreness which will subside within a few days. You can resume normal activities immediately. Usually the effect begins in a few days and increases for a couple of weeks. Depending on the amount of medication used and individual variation, the effect usually lasts between some months and a year with the average being 7-8 months. Sweating gradually returns after this time. The degree of sweating reduction will also vary with the dose and individual variation.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

The commonest side-effects are pain at the injection sites and bruising. If the hand is injected there may be transient mild weakness especially in hand grip or in picking up fine objects.

Miradry for Underarm Sweating

1. WHAT IS THE MIRADRY?

MiraDry is a non-invasive treatment that provides a safe and lasting solution to excessive underarm sweating. It is the only non-invasive technology approved by FDA for providing lasting results

2. HOW DOES THE MIRADRY WORK?

The handpiece from the MiraDry System is placed on the underarms. It delivers precisely controlled energy to the region where the sweat glands reside and eliminates sweat glands non-invasively. Eliminated sweat glands will not grow back, resulting in a dramatic and lasting reduction of underarm sweat.

3. WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE MIRADRY TREATMENT?

The area to be treated will be marked and anaesthesized. The MiraDry handpiece is then placed on the area and it delivers electromagnetic energy to eliminate the sweat glands. You will feel suction from the vacuum in the handpiece with little or no pain. The procedure lasts about an hour.

4. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

There is minimal to no recovery time. Patients can resume their normal activities on the same day and can resume exercising within the next few days. Some localized soreness or swelling is normal, and typically clears within a few weeks

Patients will see a reduction in sweat immediately after the first treatment, and achieve an average underarm sweat reduction of 82 percent. As with any medical procedure, results will vary for each patient.

5. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

MiraDry is a safe and effective treatment for excessive underarm sweating. Only 2 percent of the 4 million sweat glands in the human body are found in the underarms, and treating these sweat glands with MiraDry does not affect the body's ability to cool itself.

At the energy levels that offer the best results, patients often experience localized soreness or swelling, which should be temporary and clear in a few weeks. Some patients experience short-term altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms, which also should disappear over time. Other temporary side-effects include discomfort, tenderness or pain in the underarm when touched, bumps under the treated skin, redness from the device suction and bruising at the local anaesthesia site.

Less common side-effects include hyperpigmentation (may last for a few months) and rashes at the treatment site.

6. HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED? ARE RESULTS PERMANENT?

Typically two treatments are recommended at 3 months apart.

The results are long-lasting because the sweat glands do not regenerate after they have been eliminated. The MiraDry procedure uses a safe, non-invasive technology that has been cleared by the FDA to eliminate sweat glands in the underarm.

7. WHO ARE SUITED FOR THE MIRADRY PROCEDURE?

Anyone above 18 years old with excessive underarm sweating (primary axillary hyperhidrosis) is suitable for MiraDry treatment. People who are bothered with body odour, stained clothing, frequent antiperspirant application and embarrassing underarm sweat breakouts will benefit from the Miradry procedure.

8. HOW DOES THE MIRADRY PROCEDURE DIFFERS FROM OTHER AVAILABLE TREATMENTS FOR EXCESSIVE UNDERARM SWEATING?

The non-invasive MiraDry procedure results in a noticeable, drastic reduction of underarm sweat without the pain, risk, and recovery time of invasive procedures. Unlike some injection treatments that aim to temporarily disable the sweat glands and need continuous maintenance procedures, MiraDry only needs two treatments to produce drastic, lasting results.

9. WHAT ELSE CAN MIRADRY DO?

Besides eliminating sweating, Miradry is also FDA approved for treating body odor and remove underarm hairs.
